Sometimes Working For Free Has Its Perks

So for those of you who don't know, I am a public relations major and on campus there is a Bradley Public Relations student-run agency where students who want more experience can work on a variety of accounts with real clients. It is a great way to learn more and get some real experience, however unless you are an account director, you don't get paid for anything you do in the agency.

So for the past 2 semesters I have been working on an account with American Mothers Inc. and they just had their 75th anniversary in NEW YORK CITY and the best part was that I GOT TO GO! They paid for 4 of us to fly out there and stay at the Waldorf=Astoria which is such a pretty and fancy hotel. I spent a ton of hours planning, preparing and writing their strategic plan that we created for their organization before we went. It was all kinda stressful because finals had just ended and we had less than a week to really pull everything together.

It was a great experience and sweet that I had a totally free trip. I probably only spent about $20 the whole time I was in New York because they even covered our food and transportation.

We were only there from Thursday to Sunday, but I had a little free time to see some sights as well as sneak off to New Jersey to spend the night at my house with my family on the last night. It was great!

The hardest part was that it was my first time away from my hubby since we've been married and I missed him so much! Thank goodness for texting and camera phones so that I was able to take pictures of everything I was doing and send them to him throughout the day.

We also met up with some other PR students who are in NYC for internships this summer and went to Carlos Bakery where the TLC show Cake Boss is filmed. I tried my very first cannoli.

  3. Yeah every time I go home or go to NY I always end up wishing that I lived in New York. Maybe one day.....

Oh and Lisa- I met Cate because we worked on the project together so I got to know her. She is an advertising major so I don't really see her too often otherwise, but yeah what a small world!
